Drysiders Peer Review Group

The Dry-Siders Indexing Group is an informal group of persons interested in indexing who meet occasionally to discuss indexing issues. Attendees come from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. All are welcome.

The meetings of the Drysiders Peer Review Group occur irregularly in non-snowy months. Please contact Annanaomi Sams for details.

2006 (We know this "looks" out of date, but the discussions continue)

September 16, 2006
The Drysiders' Group will be meeting on September 16 at 11:00 in Moscow, Idaho, to discuss chapters 8 and 9 of Facing the Text by Do Mi Stauber. Please join us if you can. We will meet in the Maps Room of the Library at the University of Idaho.

This is a link to a map of the Moscow region:
Go here to find a map of campus. The Library is building #66 (C,3 on the map grid). Here's a version that shows a broader area and with the parking lots in color:

DIRECTIONS...
If you come into town from Pullman on Washington highway 270 (aka Idaho highway 8 or Pullman Moscow Road) drive past the Palouse Shopping Mall (on the left) to the intersection just past the mall (second traffic light once you cross the border) and turn RIGHT onto Perimeter Drive (or it might be called "Farm Road" at the intersection). Follow Perimeter Drive around the playing fields to a stop sign. Turn LEFT on 6th Street. This will lead you through campus. On 6th Street you will encounter a stop sign at Stadium Road then Rayburn St. Turn RIGHT on Rayburn St. The Library is the third building up the street on your left.

There's a large parking lot on the right side of Rayburn that would be a good place to park. Parking is open on Saturdays, so you can park free in any campus lot or on the street. Once you are parked and have found the Library, come through the doors, turn RIGHT, walk straight (past the Circulation Desk) as far as you can to the Map Room. We will be the rowdy bunch in the corner.

After the meeting, we might all mosey down to Mikey's Greek Gyros for some lunch. Hope to see you here!

August 19, 2006
The next Drysiders meeting will be held in Spokane, WA on August 19, 2006.  We will meet at our customary 11:00am time and will adjourn about 2:00-3:00pm depending on how long we continue our discussion.  The discussion will cover chapters 6-7 of Do Mi Stauber’s book, Facing the Text, as we continue through it this summer.  We will meet on the beautiful campus of Whitworth College in George’s Place in the Hixon Union Building (HUB).  George’s Place is a faculty room, not a restaurant.  Since it will be after summer school is over and before Fall Semester begins, no food service will be available on campus.  Lemonade and baked goods will be available for snacking.  Either bring your own lunch, or we can break for lunch and walk 2 blocks to buy our lunch.  Questions?  Call Tami Robinson  509-777-4483 weekdays or 509-464-1380 evenings and weekends.

Directions:  Coming from the south, east or west to Spokane, get to I-90 and take the Trent/Hamilton Avenues exit.  This exit is just to the east of the downtown area.  It will take you over the freeway and will end at the traffic light at the corner of Trent and Hamilton.  Proceed through the light northward and you will be on Hamilton.  You will pass the Gonzaga University campus on the left.  Just keep going north on Hamilton.  Eventually the road will jog to the right as it goes up a hill and will become Nevada St.  Keep going north on Nevada for a long way.  Some major cross streets you will pass as you go into North Spokane will be Wellesley, Francis, Lincoln, Magnesium.  The second light after the intersection of Magnesium will be Hawthorne Rd.  Turn left on Hawthorne Rd. (west).  Go through 3 traffic lights. After the 3rd one Whitworth College will be on the right hand side of the road.  Turn right into the first driveway that says Whitworth College.  As the road curves to the right, you will see a big building to the left across the grass.  That is the Hixson Union Building (HUB). Follow the road to the right and you will see a big parking lot on the right behind the HUB.  Park there and walk back over to the HUB.  You can get in from either side of the building.  Once inside you will be standing in a central area and you will see stairs that go up to the second level. There are 2 sets of stairs, the main staircase and a smaller one across the room.  If you take the smaller one, George’s Place will be close to the top of the stairs. George’s Place is on the second level.  It has a name plate to the left of the door.

If you are coming from the north, take highway 2 or highway 395 into Spokane until you get to the light at Hawthorne Rd.  Turn right on Hawthorne Rd. (west).  From highway 395 it will only be 1 light, and from highway 2 it will be 2 lights.  Then follow the rest of the directions as above.

2004

September 18, 2004
10.30am to 12.30pm at the WSU Tri-Cities Consolidated Information Center. See below for directions. In addition to reviewing indexes we will be discussing issues (pros/cons) in purchasing laptop computers.
See you there!

August 7, 2004
10.30am to 12.30 pm at the WSU Tri-Cities Consolidated Information Center. See information from June 19 meeting. We will be bringing a current index or an index we like for review and discussion. Lunch to follow as usual.

June 19, 2004
10.30 am to 12.30 pm at the WSU Tri-Cities Consolidated Information Center. Following are driving instructions and two maps provided by Annanaomi that should help for those of us coming from outlying areas:
From the Tri-City Airport: take 20th Avenue south from the airport to I-182. Following the sign for Richland, go West for 8 miles. Take Exit 5B marked "Geo. Washington Way" and continue on George Washington Way, going North for 4.8 miles. Turn right on First Street and then take the next right onto University Drive. Follow the road into the parking lot. The room, 223 is located on the second floor of the building. To get to the room, upon entering the building from the parking lot, use the stairs in the lobby area. The room is not in the Consolidated Libraries. Map 1 and Map 2.
We will be looking at the exercise from the last meeting, a review of the Cosmos Index using the Wilson Guidelines and creating a quick style guide using Pilar's format. This should not take too much time.
Second, to get back into the swing of indexing, we will do a short selection from Lawrence Lessig's book Free Culture, Chapter 13 titled "Eldred". This is a tad longer than 30 pages but any portion of it for discussion should work. The book does have an index which will give us something for comparison. If anyone has time to read the entire book, it is very interesting and put copyright in a different perceptive for me.

April 17, 2004 Canceled due to scheduling conflicts
The next meeting is at the usual place and time. We are going to look at the index for Cosmos by Carl Sagan which won the 1981 Wilson Award. Our plan is to review the index using the Wilson guidelines and prepare a style sheet for it.
• Cosmos Index in pdf format (1.6Mb may take a while to download, an option is to find a copy of the book at your library and photocopy the index, your choice)
• Wilson information captured from the ASI website in pdf format
• Index Style Guide in pdf format prepared by Pilar Wyman
• I thought there was an article about this index in Keywords but have been unable to locate it. If anyone else comes across it, please let me know and I will also post that here.

2003

November 8, 2003
We indexed the "Elder Family History" which was found on the web. We discovered there is very little in the indexing literature about formatting genealogy indexes/entries, more in the genealogy literature. We also realized they are slow going, tedious, and not likely to produce large financial returns as many are self-published by the author/researcher.

August 9, 2003
Hmm, looks like this was the month we attempted a scholarly history, a selection for England Under the Tudors by Arthur D. Innes.

May 10, 2003
Canceled due to conflicting schedules. We were scheduled to look at an article on Chlorine.

March 8, 2003
I think this was the meeting we indexed a history thesis by Taylor on "Women in Memorial Literature" or maybe this was October's topic??

2002

October 12, 2002
Nothing in my notes about what we indexed.

July 20, 2002
This was the first meeting. My notes indicate that we indexed Wild Water by Ellis Lucia and compared our indexes.

May 11, 2002
This is generally considered the event which sparked the formation of Drysiders. Sherry Smith organized an intermediate/advanced indexing workshop where we all indexed Hubbell's A Year in the Country. Sherry lead the discussion/comparison of our indexes. We enjoyed it so much that some of us decided to meet again.
