West Plains Gazette Pro Bono Project
The West Plains Gazette is a publication about local and regional (Ozark) history. Thirty issues were locally produced and published between 1975 and 1987. The Gazettes are folksy, but very nicely produced. Each issue is 80 to 90 oversize pages with large type. Articles were written by current and former residents of the area, and illustrated generously with photographs. The project is being coordinated by Jane Henderson, a former resident of West Plains, Missouri. She has prepared a sample index and a set of guidelines, and is available for questions by email or phone. The time required to complete an index for one issue varies based on length of experience, but is estimated at 20 hours. There is no deadline on the project, but volunteers are encouraged to complete their work within two to three months. Indexes for individual issues are being provided to the client for temporary use as they are completed. When all issues have been indexed, a cumulated index will be prepared. Each indexer will be acknowledged on the issue index and on the cumulated index.
Each volunteer must submit an application and be approved for participation by Sherry Smith, Coordinator of the Pro Bono Committee. For more information about the Pro Bono Committee, contact Sherry Smith. For more information about the West Plains Gazette Project, contact Jane Henderson.
